"Battle of the Bands" is an episode that at first glance, looks like it's going to be boring. It's a plot that has been done, we have one location (excepting a flashback) and the episode focuses almost entirely on Zack, which is a risk since he isn't the first character to come to mind as a starring role character.

Yet all this is proven wrong, since this is a very good episode.

Everything is done really well: The jokes are very good (if a little weaker than other MML episodes), the story is still fun despite it's clichés, and it even manages to play with some of them (a definite highlight is how The Lumberzacks start to break apart).

The music is another highlight, from one of the silliest songs in MML ("He Shall Be Our Leader") to one of it's catchiest ("A Bumpy Ride Tonight"). And who can forget the singing saw? Or "Reflective Randy and the See-What-You've-Becomes"?

As I have said, the jokes and story could have been better. And it's strange to see so very little from Milo and Melissa. And, with all fairness, it could be more memorable.

But this already good episode is taken up a notch by the master performance by Zack.

Sure, it's not an amazing performance, and he'll probably (hopefully) be given a deeper character study, but the jokes, characterization, and voice performance by Mekai Curtis are excellent.

There are also some nice little bits: Oliva Olson getting a character (though I am much more excite for Veronica), Slash's guest appearance, Mort's funny role.

All in all, this is a great episode, even if it could be a bit more memorable.

What did you think? Is it a winner? Or is it more of a Lumbermax? Share your thoughts!

Next Time: Come, my friends, and I'll tell you a tale. A tale so epic, so daring and so mystifying, that it can only be called in one name: The Quest... Or, you know, "The Math Book", the actual name. It's really not important, just setting the mood.
