Milo Murphy's Law Wiki

1 It begins

The marquee in front of Jefferson County Middle School appears in several episodes. It is a large dark green signboard with the name of the school in orange-yellow letters on top that can be lit up at night, with three white rows underneath, on which a customizable message can be displayed using letter cards. This marquee always shows a different message whenever it appears on Milo Murphy's Law, usually displaying a snarky message or reference, and has developed into a running gag.

There is also a marquee outside of Jefferson County's football stadium. This one is a large gray electronic sign instead of a letter board, and has a black LED screen that shows bright yellow text. It only appeared in one episode so far, but has shown three different messages.

List of marquee messages[]

Season 1[]

Episode Image Message Notes
"Going the Extra Milo" Marquee01 "CHECK OUT
OUR NEW
MARQUEE."
"Rooting for the Enemy" 35 "TIGERS
VS
GECKOS"
This episode is the only instance of the football stadium's electronic sign being used instead of the school's usual marquee.

Furthermore, the third message appears to be a reference to Phineas and Ferb's Major Monogram, who tends to yell out "Great googly moogly" in surprise as a catchphrase (Melissa borrows the same catchphrase seconds after the third message is shown, as well).

"Missing Milo" MM marquee 3 "MR. RAHOO'S

Letters fall out when Jerry crashes into the marquee, removing the former message. The aforementioned Pistachion is seen rearranging the letters to make the latter message right before he disappears.

"Disaster of My Dreams" DOMD 16 "IS JEFFERSON COUNTY
MIDDLE COOL!"
"Some Like it Yacht" SLIY 158 "I LIKE
BIG BOATS
AND I CANNOT LIE"
This message is a reference to the lyric "I like big butts and I cannot lie", from "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-Lot.
"Backward to School Night" BTSN 1
"PARENT-TEACHER
CONFERENCES
BY APPOINTMENT
TONIGHT 6-9 P.M."
"World Without Milo" WWM 1 "IT'S SAFETY WEEK!
NEXT WEEK...
NOT SO MUCH"
In both cases, the letters from the former message fall out so the remaining letters spell out the latter message.
"IT'S SAFE

NOT"
WWM 162 "MR. NOLAND DISCUSSES
VENUS DE MILO"
WWM 174 "NO
MILO"
"Fungus Among Us" Fungus (415) "GONE GREEN
EVERYONE'S DONE IT."
This is one of the few instances in which the school's name on the marquee is shown in green rather than orange-yellow.

Season 2[]

Episode Image Message Notes
"Snow Way Out" SWO Marquee "ERMAH GERD
SNER!"
A reference to the ERMAHGERD meme. Specifically, ERMAHGERD SNER, which usually depicts an animal in the snow.

This is also one of the few instances in which the school's name on the marquee is shown in green rather than orange-yellow.

"Teacher Feature" TF (12) "DON'T CRY OVER
SPILT MILK...
It'll taste TEAR-able!"
This is the only instance in which lower-case letters have been used in the marquee message.
"Picture Day" PD Marquee "THERE ARE ONLY 82 DAYS
IN SUMMER VACATION

AND THAT'S 104 DAYS AWAY"
The first time this message shows up, a typo is displayed ("THERES ARE [...]"). The erroneous S got removed the second time the marquee is seen. However, the second time also rims the white rows with the green hue in regular daylight, not matching the darker hue from the sunset.

Furthermore, the message is another reference to Phineas and Ferb, this time to its theme song, which starts with "There's 104 days of summer vacation".

PD Marquee 2
"Milo's Shadow" MS (30) "THIS WEEK
EVERYDAY IS
SHADOW DAY"
"Dog Walker, Runner, Screamer" DWRS (52) "ASK YOUR MOTHER FOR
FIFTEEN CENTS TO
SEE THE ELEPHANT
JUMP THE FENCE"
The message is a direct reference to a set of lyrics from the clapping game nursery rhyme "Mary Mack".
"Ride Along Little Doggie" RALD (1) TONIGHT 7PM"
"Cast Party" CastParty (1) " TOP  TEALING
LETTERS"
Given some of the empty spaces, the joke is that the message originally said "STOP STEALING LETTERS", prior to two letters being stolen anyway.
"Safety First" Safety First (186) "CUT TO
ESTABLISHING SHOT
OF SCHOOL"
Display of breaking the fourth wall, describing the transition from the previous scene to this one in script form.
"The Speech and Debate League of Death and Destruction Cross Town Explosion Event" TSaDLoDaDCTEE (12) "SPEECH & DEBATE LEAGUE
EVENT TICKETS
STILL AVAILABLE"
"The Mid-Afternoon Snack Club" Mid-Afternoon Snack Club (1) "YOU'RE GOING TO
HAVE NEW
ADVENTURES TOGETHER"
Later during the episode, the Cyborg Bear slashes through the marquee, causing the letters of the former message to fall out in order to spell the latter.
Mid-Afternoon Snack Club (123) "RE

Trivia[]

  • There was a running gag in Kim Possible with the marquee of Middleton High School, which also features different jokes and snarky messages per episode, just like this marquee.
  • The marquee message shown in the first episode, "Going the Extra Milo" ("CHECK OUT OUR NEW MARQUEE"), indicates that it was a recent addition to the Jefferson County Middle School. It can be presumed that prior to the first day of school, the middle school either had an older marquee in place, or never even had a marquee to begin with.
